Who are Friends of the Monroe County Dog Parks?
Friends of the Monroe County Dog Parks is a group of volunteers working together to raise funds for dog parks in Monroe County. We operate on a $0 budget and all money raised is directly deposited into the dog park trust fund.
Why are dog parks important?
Dog parks benefit both dog owners and non-owners alike by:
- Providing a legal recreational outlet for dog owners who want to exercise and socialize their dogs in a safe, leash-free environment.
- Preventing unwanted encounters between unleashed dogs and other park users.
- Allowing people with limited mobility to exercise their dogs in a safe, accessible place.
- Bringing people together to promote a greater sense of community.
Where are the dog parks going to be located?
The dog parks will be built in Ellison Park, Durand Eastman Park, Genesee Valley Park, and Greece Canal Park. These parks were chosen because of their locations across the county, adequate space, and amenities.
Where did the land come from?
The land was assigned for use as dog parks by Monroe County based on information from the community and the Monroe County Parks Department. The only contingency is that the money needed to fence the dog parks be raised through fundraising.
How big will the parks be?
Each park will encompass at least one acre which will ensure plenty of room for the dogs to run.
How will the parks be set up?
Each park will be fenced in using 5-foot fencing and a double gate system for ease of leashing. Each park will have separate fenced small dog and large dog areas.
How will the parks be patrolled?
Parks are under the jurisdiction of the Monroe County Parks Department and the Monroe County Sheriff. However, the parks will for the most part be self-patrolled, as is the case now in Monroe County Parks.
What facilities are available for humans?
Each dog park is located near parking, restrooms, and pay phones.
Is there a fee to use the dog parks?
The annual fee per dog will be $24. This fee will cover maintenance, improvements, and go towards building more parks.
How will I know who has paid for their dog?
When paying your annual fee, proof of licensing will be required to ensure all dogs are up to date on their rabies vaccination. A colored tag will be provided that must be attached to your dog’s collar. If you see a dog without a colored tag, you should then ask the owner about the dog’s tags. It is possible that some dog owners, especially in the beginning, may not know the proper procedure. You may also choose to call and report the dog and it’s owner. Further information and details will be provided when you register your dog for the dog parks.
